Insurance is so important for our lives. Shouldn’t it be just as important for your potential roofer to be properly insured as well?
We have insurance for so many areas of our lives and it’s a wise practice to have that type of coverage. Insurance like medical, home, life, and auto etc. just to hedge our bets and keep out of potential devastation and financial ruin.
All reputable residential roofing companies should carry a General Liability Insurance policy. Having the proper amount is just as important. This general liability insurance is there if in case something goes wrong. For example any unforeseen damage occurs with your home or workers. It’ll all be covered under the policy. It also contains certain required amounts in several categories. Bodily injury, Property damage, and Combined Single Limit.
The Good News:
This means you, the homeowner, will not be out of pocket any money if something goes wrong to your home during installation. A quality roofing company should have at least a $1 million policy or 2 times the “Each Occurrence”.
Regional Building Department:
Most local county building departments require roofing companies to carry the proper amount of general liability insurance. Roofing companies will have to, if they want to keep their D-1 roofing license in good standing. Additionally, they need it so they can continue to pull re-roof permits. If not, they’re out of luck. Unfortunately, many out of state roofing contractors try to find their way around this and cheat the system by not even purchasing a re-roof permit. They simply hope they don’t get caught. This is another reason to make sure you go with a local roofer that is in good standing with your local building department.
National Certifications and Affiliations:
It’s also a good thing if your roofer is backed by, or certified by national companies. Many quality roofing companies are affiliated with or certified by shingle manufacturers like Owens Corning and GAF to name a couple. Angies List is another large national service company that roofers work through. Roofing companies must go through background checks and make sure they have an A rating with the BBB. They must also be financially stable and guess what? Carry the appropriate amount of General Liability Insurance!
Therefore, be sure to ask your potential roofer if they are affiliated with any of these shingle manufacturers and service companies. Also ask for an up to date copy of their General Liability Insurance policy. They should gladly show it to you. If they can’t or won’t…beware!
