10 Steps to Start Your Roof Hail Insurance Claim is an easy solution to a daunting task, especially if you’ve never filed one before. When a hail storm strikes your neighbor hood and home, it can be a scary event. There can be a lot of property damage and that alone is sad and overwhelming. How can your home and personal property ever get back to new? It can and will happen. It all starts with filing a hail insurance claim. Once you get the process started, it will all begin to come together and soon enough, your roof and property will be good as new! If you’ve never filed a hail insurance claim before or it’s been awhile since you last did, these 10 steps will get you on your way to start your roof hail insurance claim.
Initial Steps
Step 1: Find your homeowner’s insurance paperwork. Either filed away in a file cabinet, drawer, safety box or electronically. If you can’t find them, now worries. You can start online.
Step 2: Google your “insurance company name” + “claims number” ex. “Farmers claim phone number.”
Step 3: Call their “800” number to file a claim.
Insurance Questions
Step 4: They will ask you for your policy number. If you don’t know it they can look your information up by your home address.
Step 5: Your insurance company will ask you what type of claim are you filing? Answer “home” or “auto” or both for hail damage.
Step 6: It’s important to know when this event occurred, because they will ask you the date of when the hail storm happened. ex. 6/13/2018
Meetings With Roofer and Adjuster
Step 7: Depending on the severity of the hail storm, many insurance companies will want to have the roof hail damage verified by a professional roofer before they go to the next step. If you don’t know of a roofer you can find them on the internet. Google, roofing + your city or town. ex. “roofing Colorado Springs”. This will get you started on finding a quality roofing company. Tip: make sure they have good reviews, 4.5 or higher, before you call. Once the hail damage is verified by a roof inspection by a qualified and professional roofer, call your insurance company back and let them know there is in fact hail damage.
Step 8: They will let you know that an Insurance Adjuster will be contacting you soon to come out and verify ALL the damage to your entire property. An adjuster will usually call and schedule within 24-48 hours. Sometimes more if the storm was a really big one. An adjuster is an employee or an independent individual who is professional and highly qualified and has hundreds of hours of training to assess all of the damage to your property or auto. It can be a good idea to have the roofer meet with your adjuster at the scheduled time.
Insurance Claim Paperwork and Getting Started
Step 9: Your adjuster will create for you a full report of all of the damage usually in 24 hours and even up to a week. This typically will come with a check to get you started on fixing all of the damage. They will subtract your deductible and some Recoverable Depreciation monies in most cases. You will receive the Recoverable Depreciation as the work is completed.
Step 10: Once you receive this hail insurance claim report and first check, contact that same roofing contractor that inspected your roof initially, or a different one and they will walk you through this process and get started on your roof replacement and any other items as well. In the mean time, you could call your insurance agent directly and ask them about your deductible and any other questions you may have about your specific policy. We know hail damage to your property and this process can be very upsetting. Please try to be patient.
